What is the significance of the Kateb el Kitab ceremony?

Islam prescribed the marriage ceremony to distinguish it from an unlawful relationship. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said: "Publicize this marriage by beating the duff [a musical instrument]." Islam considers joyful feelings towards the marriage ceremony an act for which a Muslim is rewarded.
